{"id":19414,"date":"2026-07-24T20:45:17","date_gmt":"2026-07-24T20:45:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tastyrecipes.milaf.ma\/?p=19414"},"modified":"2026-07-24T20:45:17","modified_gmt":"2026-07-24T20:45:17","slug":"discovery-of-planets-with-magnetic-fields-outside-the-solar-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tastyrecipes.milaf.ma\/index.php\/2026\/07\/24\/discovery-of-planets-with-magnetic-fields-outside-the-solar-system\/","title":{"rendered":"Discovery of planets with magnetic fields outside the solar system"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span dir=\"auto\">Astronomers have found the strongest evidence yet that planets outside the solar system have magnetic fields, just like Earth and five other planets in\u00a0 <\/span><span dir=\"auto\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">This discovery was based on measuring the movement, speed, and direction of winds on seven large, hot gas planets outside the solar system, according to a study published in the journal\u00a0 <\/span><span dir=\"auto\">on Tuesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">The discovery, based on observations made with telescopes in <\/span><span dir=\"auto\">and Hawaii, enhances our understanding of these planets; it shows that at least some of them share an important feature found in all but two of the eight planets of the solar system.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span dir=\"auto\">planetary magnetic field<!--nextpage--><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">Although all gas giants outside the solar system are uninhabitable, the presence of a magnetic field may be one of the factors that helped make a rocky planet, such as <\/span><span dir=\"auto\">, habitable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">These exoplanets each orbit very close to a large, hot star, so that one side of them is always facing the star, and the other side is always far away, just like the Moon and Earth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">This type of planet is called a &#8220;hot Jupiter&#8221; because its size and composition are similar to the largest planet in our solar system, although its temperature is much higher. The mass of the seven planets ranged from about the same as the mass of\u00a0 <\/span><span dir=\"auto\">to more than three times that.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span dir=\"auto\">The bright and dark sides<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">Strong winds blow from the hot &#8220;light side&#8221; to the cold &#8220;dark side&#8221; on these planets, due to their orbits being close to their stars, which makes their atmosphere extremely hot on the light side. All of them are closer to their host star than Mercury, the closest planet in the solar system, is to the sun.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">&#8220;What you might expect is that the winds would be stronger on planets with higher temperatures, so the more energy you put into the system, the stronger the winds should be,&#8221; said Julia Seidel, an astronomer at the Lagrange Laboratory of the C\u00f4te d&#8217;\u00a0 <\/span><span dir=\"auto\">Observatory in Nice, France, and the lead researcher on the study. &#8220;But we are seeing the opposite.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">She added that &#8220;hotter planets are less susceptible to strong winds affecting their atmosphere, which is really strange compared to what we know about the nature of atmospheres.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">She continued: &#8220;This means that all that energy that the star pumps into the planet&#8217;s atmosphere must be dissipated in a different way, and the only possibility for slowing the atmosphere&#8217;s movement at this speed is through the magnetic field, and its interaction with the charged particles moving in\u00a0<\/span><span dir=\"auto\">.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">Wind speeds on the seven exoplanets reach 25,000 kilometers per hour, stronger than those on Jupiter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">Given that most planets in the solar system have magnetic fields, researchers believe it is not surprising that exoplanets also have magnetic fields, but they noted that scientists have so far found it difficult to come up with convincing evidence.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span dir=\"auto\">Planets and their atmospheres<!--nextpage--><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">The magnetic field is one of the factors that determine whether a planet is able to maintain its atmosphere for long periods of time; Mars, for example, once had a magnetic field, but lost it billions of years ago after its interior cooled, and now has a weak atmosphere and an uninhabitable environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">&#8220;Despite the common misconception that magnetic fields directly determine whether a planet is habitable, they may play an important role in (knowing) how a planet has evolved over time,&#8221; said astronomer Bibiana Brenoth of the European Southern Observatory in <\/span><span dir=\"auto\">, who co-authored the study.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">She added: &#8220;Life as we know it depends on the presence of an atmosphere that helps maintain pressure on the surface (of the planet) and regulates temperature, and allows on Earth for liquid water to exist on the surface.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Astronomers have found the strongest evidence yet that planets outside the solar system have magnetic fields, just like Earth and&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":19415,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-19414","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/tastyrecipes.milaf.ma\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/19414","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/tastyrecipes.milaf.ma\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/tastyrecipes.milaf.ma\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/tastyrecipes.milaf.ma\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/tastyrecipes.milaf.ma\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=19414"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/tastyrecipes.milaf.ma\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/19414\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":19416,"href":"https:\/\/tastyrecipes.milaf.ma\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/19414\/revisions\/19416"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/tastyrecipes.milaf.ma\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/19415"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/tastyrecipes.milaf.ma\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=19414"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/tastyrecipes.milaf.ma\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=19414"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/tastyrecipes.milaf.ma\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=19414"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
