To protect your mental health… learn the difference between sadness and depression

Pay attention if the low mood, or loss of pleasure, persists for most of the day, most days, for two weeks or more.

Anxiety increases if it is accompanied by a clear disturbance in sleep, a significant change in appetite or weight, extreme fatigue, noticeable slowness or tension, poor concentration, a persistent feeling of guilt or worthlessness, thoughts of death, or .

Likewise, if a person becomes unable to perform their basic tasks, stops going to work or school, neglects their hygiene and food, or completely withdraws from their relationships, this needs to be assessed.

Depression is treatable, and the earlier support begins, the greater the chance of improvement and reduced complications.

Tips for treating depression

The first step is not to blame yourself; depression is not laziness, luxury, or weakness, and you should talk to a doctor or psychologist, especially if the symptoms persist or affect the life of the affected person.

Treatment may include psychotherapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, or others, and may include antidepressant medication in some cases, or a combination of the two.

The National Institute of Mental Health in indicated that depression can be treated in multiple ways, and that seeking help is an essential step.

In addition to treatment, some supportive habits can help, such as , light movement, reducing isolation, regulating sleep, and breaking down large tasks into very small steps, but these tips do not replace treatment if the symptoms are severe or persistent.

If suicidal thoughts, a wish to die, or a search for a way to harm oneself occur, this is an emergency requiring immediate help. You should contact emergency services, go to the nearest hospital, or call an urgent mental health support hotline, and not leave the person alone.

Help should also be sought quickly if the person hears voices, has delusions, does not sleep for several days with abnormal urges, or becomes unable to care for himself or his children.
